AFTER HIS FATHER’S PASSING IN 1921, HE
TOOK OVER THE CANNON TEXTILE INDUSTRY
AND BECAME ONE OF THE YOUNGEST
INDUSTRIAL MANAGERS IN THE WORLD.
Cannon’s first experience in the textile industry was at an early age.
After attending Fishburne Military Academy and Davidson College, Cannon entered the textile industry himself, achieving success as a manager, treasurer and secretary.
Cannon was the youngest of 10 children and the son of a textile mill owner.

CABARRUS MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
Cannon founded the hospital in 1937. Today the hospital is known as Carolina’s Medical Center Northeast.
THE BELK COMPANY WAS ONE OF THE LAST PRIVATELY OWNED RETAIL CHAINS IN THE USA.
IN 2015 BELK COMPANY WAS ADQUIRED BY SYCAMORE PARTNERS, BASED IN NEW YORK.
Following World War II, Cannon was a major contributor to Wingate College (now Wingate University). His generosity helped the campus grow and allowed them to expand the curriculum.
Charles A. Cannon died in 1971.
